Prioritization Is Violence

Every yes is a no to a dozen possibilities.

[ essay ]

Prioritization is not a clean sorting exercise — it is the quiet elimination of viable alternatives.

I sat in a roadmap session where we said yes to a dashboard refresh and watched three other bets die without a funeral: the webhook retry work, the audit log export, the onboarding fix that support had flagged for months. Nobody wrote those nos down. They just stopped appearing in updates until a stakeholder asked where they went and sounded personally betrayed.

They treat the visible roadmap as the whole story. The shadow roadmap — everything you could have built with the same people and the same quarter — is always longer. Disappointment at the reveal is load-bearing; naming the cuts is what makes the survivors credible.

If you cannot show the tradeoff in one sentence, you have not prioritized — you have only deferred the fight.

Publish what you killed and why, in writing. The team that mourns its options ships the chosen work with more conviction.
