Complementary Wellness for Developers Under Load

Sleep, food, and a walk still outrank a bottle. Scent can mark the shift. Load is a system.

When a sprint week goes ugly, I do not reach for a bottle first. I look at sleep, food, and whether I have left the chair. Load is a system. Screens, Slack, time zones, a dry office, ADHD that will not drop a tab. Scent can mark a shift inside that system. It cannot be the system.

Sleep is the boring first repair. A consistent shutdown, even a short one, does more for the next day’s code than a new oil. Food that is not only caffeine and a bar. Movement that is a walk around the block in Tāmaki Makaurau or a porch lap I would have taken in New Orleans when the heat finally dropped. I say this as someone who will skip all three and then wonder why a diffuser feels like a joke. Complementary means the oils sit next to those habits. Alternative, in the way it gets sold, often means instead of. I do not do instead of. If I need a clinician, therapy, or time off, a citrus note is not a substitute.

Scent as cue is the part I keep. Same mix when I start a focus block. Same quieter note when I close the laptop. The brain likes pairing. That is not a cure for burnout and I will not write it like one. Under chronic stress I also watch sensory load: fewer bottles, shorter sessions, no stacking in a small room with a pet. Dilution if anything touches skin. Pregnancy and meds still get a real conversation, not a blog comment.

I discard practices that require buying hope in bulk. Twelve-step face routines, subscription orbs, a cart of “adrenal support.” Maintenance I can run tired is the filter. A glass of water, a walk, a timer, one oil I tolerate. The HVAC still sits in the same body as the deadline. The work does not care which country the chair is in. The load still adds up.

If the week is medical, treat it as medical. These notes are for the rest: builders under ordinary overload who want a small, honest stack. Sleep, food, movement first. Scent if it helps you start or stop. Nothing here replaces care you already know you need.
