How to Stay Safe as a Solo Tech Traveler

Solo travel is not a dare. It is a set of boring backups I hope I never use. I have walked home from a late coworking session in a city I liked and felt the street go wrong: too quiet, too interested, too many reasons to take the long way. I took the rideshare. Pride is not a safety tool.

Someone I trust gets the itinerary: flights, addresses, the rough shape of the week. Not a public dump. A person who would notice if I went quiet. I send a daily check-in, even a one-line “alive, working.” When the hemisphere is Aotearoa and the person is still on Louisiana time, we pick a window that works for both of us and we keep it. The ritual is the point.

Document copies live in two places I can reach if the pouch is gone: encrypted cloud, and an offline copy on the laptop. Passport photo page, visa, insurance, card numbers I can cancel. I do not keep the only copy in the bag that can be stolen with the passport. I also do not post the live location of an empty apartment to a feed.

Gut on empty streets is allowed to win. Headphones out if the block feels off. I do not perform lost in a way that invites help I did not ask for. I look like I know the next turn even when I am following a map in my pocket. That is not a personality. That is a habit from being a woman moving through places alone, including cities that market themselves as gentle.

The laptop is a target. I do not leave it on a café chair “just for a second.” I sit with a wall behind me when I can. This is not a gear essay. It is the reminder that a stolen bag is also a stolen week of identity recovery.

I learn the local emergency number before I need it. I keep a little cash that is not my only cash. I tell the truth to myself about alcohol, late trains, and the night I am too tired to make good choices. Safety scales with planning, not with a story about how fearless I am. Fearless is how people skip the check-in. I send the message. Then I go to sleep.
