Notes on Gadgets That Earn Their Weight

Power bank, eSIM, compact hub — each one pays rent in grams or it stays home.

Grams are honest. If a gadget does not pay rent in power, a working number, or a desk that is not a laptop hinge, it stays on the shelf at home. This is not the carry-on inventory and it is not a lecture about bags. It is three objects I have weighed against delay, dead sockets, and hotel TVs that only speak HDMI.

The power bank earns its mass on the day the gate holds you for four hours and every outlet is a rumor. I charge it the night before a flight. I do not treat it as a brick for other people’s phones unless I like them a lot. Capacity enough for a laptop top-up or a full phone day, not a generator. The cheap ones that swell in heat have no place in a Louisiana summer bag or a car parked in Auckland January. Buy once. Check the airline watt-hour limit. Keep it in the personal item, not checked.

An eSIM earns its weight the minute the plane door opens. I land with data. I do not hunt a kiosk while jet-lagged and trying to confirm a key handover. I install the profile before I leave, test it, and keep a screenshot of the ICCID in the vault. Physical SIMs still matter for some banks. The eSIM is for the first forty-eight hours and for the weeks when I do not want a second piece of plastic to lose. If a country blocks it, I find out at home, not at immigration.

The compact hub is the unglamorous one. USB-C in, HDMI and a couple of ports out. Hotel desks and short-stay monitors become usable. One cable instead of a nest. I have cut travel mice and dongles that only served one laptop I no longer own. The hub survived because it still maps to the current machine.

Everything else is a maybe. A second charger if the first is USB-C and I already carry a bank. A travel router if the building Wi-Fi is a maze; most weeks it is not worth the cube. Gadgets that look like preparedness and act like clutter fail the scale. I put the three on the kitchen counter, pack them, walk the stairs. If my shoulder complains, I did not pack electronics. I packed anxiety.
