Notes on Staying in Motion Without a Gym Membership

Walking is the default. A room routine is backup. Neither needs to become a score.

A gym membership in a city I will leave in three weeks is a receipt. Walking is the default that does not require a signup or a towel I will forget. I take stairs when the building has them. I do the grocery run on foot if the hill is honest and the bag is not a dare. Tāmaki Makaurau will make you earn a bus stop. That is useful if I stop treating every errand as a failure of efficiency.

The hotel-room version is short. Squats against a wall. A stretch for the hip that hates airplane seats. Push-ups I can finish without waking the next room. Ten minutes, not a program. I do it after I close the laptop, before I decide the day is only screens. If the room is a shoebox, I walk the block twice and call it done. Pride is how people skip the next day.

I do not need another metric. Step counts and streaks turn movement into a performance I will fail on a sick Thursday, then abandon. Louisiana heat taught me that some days the win is a slow porch and water. Aotearoa winter taught me that a wet footpath still counts. The body wants regularity more than heroics. I keep the bar low enough that I will clear it in a new postcode.

What I refuse: touring gyms as content. Comparing my week to someone who lives here and owns a rack. Paying for a class I will attend once because the lighting was good. If a space is cheap, close, and quiet at the hour I can actually go, I use it. I do not build an identity around it.

Motion here is maintenance. Blood in the legs after a six-hour sitting block. A walk that is not a photoshoot of the waterfront, even when the waterfront is right there. I leave the headphones at home for one of those walks so the city can be noise instead of a soundtrack I control. Then I go back to the desk. The work is still the work. The walk is how I arrive able to do it.
