On Mentorship in an Industry That Moves Too Fast

The half-life of technical knowledge in this field is short.

[ trace // field response ]

The half-life of technical knowledge in this field is short. The framework that paid your rent in 2018 is a museum piece by 2026. This is the part that makes traditional mentorship — apprentice learns master’s stack — almost useless.

What does not decay is taste. How to read a system, how to weigh a trade-off, how to know when a meeting needs to end, how to call a bad idea a bad idea without crushing the person who brought it. None of these depend on the language at the top of last week’s Hacker News.

Mentor for the slow-changing layer. Teach judgement, posture, and the willingness to be wrong in public. The tools will turn over. The way someone shows up to the work is what travels with them across every stack they ever touch.
