Aging Skin and Sun — Practical Notes
Auckland UV is a dose, not a Louisiana afternoon you sweat through. Hats and SPF first.

I grew up treating sun like weather you sweat through. Aotearoa treats it like a dose. Louisiana summer is wet heat and a burn you already budget for. Auckland light is clearer. The UV index can sit high on a day that does not feel hot. I have burned on walks that felt like spring. That is not a personality failure. That is a different sky.
Photoaging is mostly UV. Creams that promise to reverse years are selling a feeling. I will use a moisturizer that makes the barrier less cranky. I will not pretend an oil erases wrinkles. Sleep and water change how a face looks because biology is visible, not because a brand wrote “youth” on a tube.
Hats are shade you carry. I wear one on the walk between buildings and on harbor paths where the bounce off water is worse than the walk felt. SPF in the morning, again if I sit in a window all afternoon or I am outside more than I planned. Reapply is the part people skip because it is unglamorous. Skipping it is how you get the New Orleans porch burn in a city that looked cloudy.
Retinoids are the other slow tool, and they need patience. Start low. Expect dryness and a few ugly weeks. Pair with moisturizer and daytime SPF or you will undo the point. They are not a weekend project. If you are pregnant, trying, or nursing, this is a conversation with a clinician, not a product page. I do not add essential oils on top of a retinoid night to “boost” anything. Diluted oils can comfort some skin. They can also irritate a barrier that is already in rehab.
I keep the rest quiet. No twelve-step anti-aging stack. No citrus oil on skin that will see midday sun. Indoor windows still count in Tāmaki Makaurau. This note is not a campaign against getting older. I am going to get older. I want fewer preventable burns and fewer products that lie about time.
If a spot changes, bleeds, or worries you, that is medical care. Oils do not belong in that sentence.
