The Minimal Gear List That Survives Carry-On Only

Carry-on only is a constraint, not a personality. Every item on this list has been left behind once and missed, or packed twice and cut. Dual-purpose or it stays home. The bag is a different note. The three gadgets that earn grams are a different note. This is the kit that has to clear a domestic sizer and still let me work the next morning.
Laptop and the charger that matches it. Without those the trip is a holiday I did not budget. Noise-canceling headphones: transit, open offices, the neighbour’s television. A compact rain shell that layers over a merino and packs into its own pocket. The shell is weather and a second warmth, not a fashion third piece.
Clothes for a weekly wash: enough shirts and underwear to reach a laundromat without buying a souvenir tee. One pair of walking shoes that can stand a meeting. Toiletries in sizes that survive security, plus a tiny med kit (pain, antihistamine, electrolytes, any prescription in original packaging). Zip bags: wet shell, leaking bottle, dirty socks kept off the clean cube. A document sleeve with passport, a paper backup of the important codes, and a card that is not the only card.
What I stopped packing: a second pair of “nice” shoes that never left the cube. A bulky adapter tree when one slim plug and the laptop brick already cover the sockets I meet. Decorative notebooks. A full-size umbrella next to a shell that already exists. Consumables I can buy in Tāmaki Makaurau or New Orleans on day one: detergent, extra toothpaste, snacks that will be confiscated anyway.
I pack the bag as I will carry it, walk a flight of stairs, and unpack anything I did not need in the last hour of that test. If I cannot lift it comfortably, I packed feelings. Airlines will not weigh my feelings at the gate, but my shoulder will. Buy the boring replacements locally. Ship the rare ones to a stable address. The list stays short because the alternative is checking a bag and then praying it shares my destination.
