How to Recover from Travel Fatigue Without a Wellness Script

Sleep, food, and fewer hops. The holistic version is the boring one.

[ journal ]

By the third delayed hop I stop calling the fog a mindset problem. I am tired because I have not slept in a dark room and I have been eating whatever the terminal sold. I recover by stopping the thing that caused it, not by buying a ritual.

The long-haul between Louisiana and Aotearoa will take a week out of you even when the flight is “fine.” Add a connection, a late key handover, and a workday you refused to cancel, and you will call it mystery brain fog. It is not mystery. You have not slept in a dark room for a normal number of hours, and you have been eating whatever the terminal sold.

Sleep first. Same window as you can manage, even if the city is exciting. Earplugs, eye mask, the boring tools. I used to treat the first night as optional because I wanted to walk. Then I wrote garbage the next afternoon and resented the city for it. The city was innocent.

Food is the second fix, and it is not a cleanse. Protein, water, something with salt if you have been flying, a grocery run so you are not surviving on pastry and caffeine. I am not interested in a protocol with a name. I am interested in not shaking through a review.

Fewer hops is the part people argue with, because the calendar looks adventurous. Adventure is expensive in recovery time. Two bases with a week of stillness beat five cities that each steal a Monday. If the year already includes a hemisphere change, you do not need a regional speedrun on top.

This is distinct from the week when travel actually goes ugly: cancelled legs, illness, a safety problem. Those need a different response than “go to bed.” It is also distinct from ordinary uneven energy, the ADHD weather that happens even when I have not left the building. Fatigue from movement has a cause you can stop. Stop moving. Then sleep. Then eat. Then decide if you even want the next ticket.

Holistic, if the word still means anything, is just refusing to decorate exhaustion. No new identity. No purchase that promises restoration. A dark room and a dull week. Then work, if the work is still the point.
