Notes on Staying Motivated When the Room Is New

First-week novelty is a tour. The deadline is still a chair and a closed tab.

The new room is interesting. The deadline is not. First weeks fail when unpacking masquerades as work and a waterfront walk masquerades as research. I have lost Tuesdays to both. The city will still be there on Saturday. The pull request will not.

I unpack the desk first. Charger, notebook, the password vault, the bottle. Then I sit for one real block before I earn a wander. Ninety minutes is enough to prove the internet and my own attention. If I cannot sit, I am not inspired. I am avoiding. The harbour in Tāmaki Makaurau does not care, and neither does the person waiting on a review.

Novelty is a solvent. It dissolves the morning sequence I had at home: kettle, inbox triage, the ugly task before the pleasant one. In a new postcode I want to map every café. Mapping is not a crime. Doing it before the first deliverable is how a relocation becomes a holiday with Slack. I pick one grocery, one walk loop, one desk. The rest of the neighborhood waits.

Louisiana departures always felt like a party at the gate. Aotearoa arrivals feel like a form and a supermarket that closes earlier than I expect. Both moods will steal a workday if I let them. I put the first deep-work block on the calendar as if the flight had not happened. Jet lag gets a shorter block, not a blank day. Blank days fill with errands that could have been a Thursday.

This is not the week-three note. Week three is when the café is just a café. Week one is when everything sparkles and your hands still want to open maps. I let myself take one long look on the first evening. Then I close the curtains enough to see the screen. Motivation here is a chair, a timer, and a refusal to audition for my own trip. Sit down. The room will become ordinary soon enough. That is when the other problem starts.
