Notes on Staying Steady When Travel Gets Ugly

Delays, illness, and bad housing get a protocol. Serenity is not the job.

The ugly stretch is not a mood. It is a cancelled connection, a fever in a bed you do not own, a listing that was a photograph of someone else’s life. I do not look for calm as a personality. I look for the next action that keeps work, health, and a roof from collapsing at the same time.

Delay protocol is dull on purpose. Rebook before you narrate. Message the people who expected you. Move the standup. Eat something that is not airport sugar. If the overnight becomes a floor, the power bank and the meds in the personal item are the plan, not a tweet about resilience. I have slept sitting up between Houston and Auckland. The useful thought was not poetry. It was whether the next desk still had me on the calendar.

Illness is a stop, not a subplot. Cancel what you can. Find a pharmacy. Drink water. Do not hero a review while your temperature is doing its own deploy. Louisiana taught me that stubbornness in heat looks like character until it is dehydration. Aotearoa taught me that after-hours care is a phone tree you should have saved before you needed it. Screenshot the local emergency number. Know where the nearest clinic is on the map, not in a memory of a walk you meant to take.

Bad housing gets documented and, if it is unsafe, left. Photos of mould, broken locks, a door that does not close. Write the host once, clearly. If the room is a scam or a health problem, you are not failing at travel by checking into a hotel for two nights while you sort it. You are refusing to make a sprint inside a hazard. Ordinary fatigue, the slow drain of too many buses, is a different note. This one is the spike.

I keep a small card in the notes app: who to call, which card has the travel buffer, where the copies of the passport live. When the day is ugly I open the card instead of inventing a self. Protocol is how you stay a person who can still ship next week. Serenity can wait.
