How to Keep Travel Money from Eating Your Runway
Watch daily burn, keep a cash buffer, and wall travel spend off the account you live on.

A city can look cheap in a spreadsheet and still eat a month of runway in ten days. The leak is rarely the listed rent. It is unnamed daily burn: rides, SIM top-ups, the café you treat as an office because the apartment Wi-Fi is a rumor, the dinner you buy because you have not found a grocery store yet.
I keep travel money in a separate account. Not because I am organized. Because mixed ledgers lie. When the same checking account pays hosting, groceries back in Louisiana, and a week of last-minute lodging, you cannot see the trip until it is over and the number is ugly.
Daily burn is the figure I actually watch. Lodging plus food plus local transit plus connectivity, averaged, not hoped. If that number does not fit the weeks I have, I do not “figure it out on the ground.” I shorten the stay or I pick a cheaper base. Optimism is not a funding source.
Cash buffer is the other wall. I want enough unallocated money that a delayed flight, a lost card, or a night in an airport hotel does not become a crisis that hits the work account. The buffer is boring on purpose. It sits there. I do not spend it on a nicer neighborhood so the photos look better.
Louisiana taught me to respect a thin month. Aotearoa taught me that currency conversion and foreign-transaction fees are a quiet tax on people who only watch the headline rate. I check the real cost of a withdrawal before I treat an ATM like a faucet.
This is not a lecture on cooking every meal, and it is not tax. Those are different problems. This is cashflow hygiene for people who still have to ship work while the scenery changes. If travel is eating the runway, the trip is not a reward. It is a burn rate you refused to name.
Name the burn before you book the next hop. Move the travel money out of the account that pays your actual life. Leave the buffer alone until something breaks. The work survives the trip only if the money does.
