How to Want the Trip Without Abandoning the Work

Desire is cheap. A week with delivery dates is not. Do not let the booking tab rewrite the calendar.

I bookmark flights the way some people bookmark recipes they will never cook. Desire is cheap. A week that already has delivery dates is not. The trick is wanting the trip without letting the booking screen rewrite the calendar.

FOMO on a fare is a specific mood. The map is open. The price is down for six hours. Your brain starts selling you a story in which the work will somehow fit around the landing time. I have bought that story. I have then spent the first three days of a city in a borrowed kitchen, shipping with a face I would not put on a video call.

Wanting to go is allowed. I left Louisiana with a serious appetite for elsewhere, and Aotearoa did not kill it. What I will not do is treat appetite as a schedule. The question is not whether the trip is beautiful. The question is which week can absorb a travel day, a lag day, and a client who still exists.

I look at the calendar before the fare. If a delivery sits in the landing window, I do not bargain with it. If the only way the trip works is “I’ll catch up on the plane,” I already know how that sentence ends. Hold the desire in a list. Book when a quiet week is real, not when the email says LAST SEATS.

This is not the client-comms problem. That essay is how to keep work and travel in a week you already committed to. This is the earlier fork: whether to create the week at all. It is also not sightseeing. Sightseeing is what you do after the work is honest. Here the work is still arguing with a wanting that does not care about tickets.

I keep a one-line rule. No booking against a date I would be ashamed to miss. The fare will return in another shape. The trust will not. When the week is actually empty enough, I book like a person who meant to, and I stop refreshing the tab. The wanting can come on the trip. It does not get to run the sprint from the search results.
