How to Travel Without Treating Every City as Disposable

Sustainability on the road is duration and consumption: stay longer, buy less, trash less, and learn the bin rules before week two.

Week one I put the wrong thing in the wrong bin and the building left a note. Recycling is not a tote bag. It is local rules I had not read. I was treating the city as a hotel with extra steps: buy, discard, leave. That is a lot of plastic for a person who likes to talk about care.

Stay longer when the work allows it. Two weeks of flights make more trash and more linen than a month in one place. I used to collect cities like proof. The proof was a carbon story I did not want to look at, plus a packing cycle that never settled. A month in Tāmaki Makaurau with a learned supermarket and a known desk is quieter on the planet and quieter in my head. Duration is the first lever. Not a slogan. A calendar.

Buy less. The “I live here now” shopping spree is how you donate a frying pan to a cupboard you will abandon. I buy consumables: food, soap, the adapter I actually need. I do not buy a second aesthetic kettle. Louisiana taught me you can cook well with almost nothing. I still forget and walk out of a Japanese dollar shop with gadgets. Those gadgets then have to fit in a bag or go in a bin. That is the consumption loop. Interrupt it at the till.

Trash less. Learn bin night, the yellow lid, whether food scraps have a caddy. Auckland councils are not guessing games if you read the card in the kitchen drawer. I have thrown a battery in general waste because I was tired. That is a failure I can name. Compost when it exists. Return bottles where the scheme exists. Do not perform a picnic of single-use everything and then post a sunset.

What I do not trust: merch that sells virtue, offset calculators as confession, groups that fly weekly and call it a community of care. The work is boring. Wash the container. Carry a bottle. Stay through the second grocery run. If you cannot stay, at least leave the room without a monument of packaging.

Paperwork has an analogue here. Visas, leases, recycling cards: adults read the local sheet. Treating every city as disposable is easier. It is also how you become the guest nobody wants in the building. I would rather be slightly boring and still welcome in week four.
