How to Maintain Output When Energy Is Uneven

Travel days are recovery, not hidden overtime; ship smaller when the body is moving, especially if energy already arrives in uneven weather.

On a move day I closed one pull request and bought milk. That was the honest ticket. I used to open the laptop in the new kitchen at 9pm and try to “catch up” a full day. I produced garbage and then slept badly. Energy was already uneven before I ever changed hemispheres. Travel does not fix ADHD. It adds a packing list and a delayed grocery run on top of the weather you already live in.

I treat travel days as recovery. Airports, key handovers, the first walk for a SIM: that is load. Sensory load, decision load, the particular fatigue of not knowing where the light switch is. Shipping a small thing is allowed. Shipping a design review and a launch is a bet against the nervous system. I write the small ticket before I leave so I am not inventing work at midnight to prove I am still a professional.

Uneven energy on a stationary week gets the same honesty. Some days the deep-work block is real. Some days it is email and a walk and a note that says “tomorrow.” I used to punish the low days with a lecture about motivation. Motivation posts are a different failure mode. This is logistics. If the body is a noisy channel, I send smaller packets. Checklists. A single file. A comment that unblocks someone else. The output is still output. It is not a TED version of myself.

Caffeine as a stand-in for sleep, “I’ll make up for it on Sunday,” a red-eye stacked on a Monday demo: I have done all three. The demo was the worst of them. I now put a buffer day after long hauls when I can afford it. When I cannot, I tell the people waiting on me that the first day is thin. Surprise thinness is how trust erodes. Named thinness is a protocol.

Louisiana summers taught me that heat can steal a afternoon. Aotearoa winters taught me that early dark can steal one too. Neither is a moral event. I keep a floor: something ships, even if it is small, on days I am at a desk. On move days the floor drops. That drop is planned. The work that needs a full brain waits for a room I already know how to leave in the dark.

A smaller ticket and a recovery day. That is how the board stays honest when the body is not a straight line.
