Slack Turned Chat into the Office
The green dot is the building. Channels are the floors.

Slack did not add chat to the office. It became the office. The building is a sidebar. The floor is a channel. Your status is a green dot that means you are available for a tap on the shoulder that never had to walk across a room.
I use Slack as a customer on projects like Nightbind, from a timezone that makes “real-time” a political ask. Salesforce closed the $27.7 billion acquisition in 2021 and named Slack the interface for Customer 360 — a digital headquarters, in their language.1 Huddles made the shoulder-tap official: audio without a calendar invite. The incentive is occupancy. If the work is not in the channel, it is not work that the org can see. Presence theater follows: stay green, reply fast, treat away-from-keyboard as a moral event. Interrupt culture is not a personal failing of noisy colleagues. It is the product doing what a chat-shaped office does when the landlord also sells CRM adjacency.
I keep status boring on purpose. Away means away. The office can be a doc. Slack is a vendor that rented the hallway. Walk it on purpose, or it will walk you.
