Plain Language Is an Act of Respect

Jargon is the cost of admission you should refuse to charge.

[ trace // field response ]

Jargon is sometimes necessary. Most of the time it is a tax. The reader pays in attention, the writer collects in perceived expertise, and the actual work — communication — happens less often than it should.

Plain language is harder to write because it requires you to actually understand the thing. The fog of jargon is what most authors hide behind when they have not yet figured out what they mean.

Write plainly on purpose. The expertise that survives translation is the expertise that was real.
