Photography Is Editing

The picture is what you chose to leave out.

[ essay ]

A photograph is not what the camera captured — it is what survived the editor’s decision about what to remove.

I shot a product launch last spring and came back with four hundred frames that were all “fine.” Fine is not a portfolio. The work happened in Lightroom: crop the distraction, kill the duplicate angle, reject the technically perfect shot that communicated nothing. Composition is subtraction. The exhibit is subtraction. The deliverable is whatever survived the cuts.

They confuse shooting with making. More frames do not fix a weak point of view — they bury it. The same logic applies outside the darkroom: the essay is what survived the edits, the feature is what survived the descope, the decision is what survived the meeting after the bad options got crossed off.

Shoot generously. Edit ruthlessly. The work your audience receives is the work that survived the omissions.
