The camera captures everything in the frame. The photograph is what survives the photographer’s choice about what to leave out. Composition is subtraction. Edit is subtraction. The exhibit is subtraction.
The same principle generalises. The essay is what survives the cuts. The product is what survives the descopes. The decision is what survives the meeting after the bad options have been crossed off.
Get comfortable with leaving things out. The work the audience receives is the work that survived the omissions.
