The Newsletter as Form: Why We Returned to Email

The newsletter is email with intentionality.

[ essay ]

The newsletter is email with intentionality — a delivery contract the writer controls, not an algorithm the platform rents back at variable rates.

We returned to it for Dark Heart Labs after watching essay posts spike and vanish. The feed reorders by engagement. The algorithm demotes long sentences. The inbox, for now, still delivers what was sent, to a person who asked to receive it. That is not nostalgia. It is a structural response to surfaces that broke the writer–reader relationship in favor of the writer–platform one.1

The form has constraints that are features: cadence you commit to, a beginning and an end, no infinite scroll, no sidebar of hotter content competing with the paragraph you are mid-thought on. It punishes filler because unsubscribe is one click and reply is one click the other direction.

Write the newsletter you would want to receive — few links, real sentences, a reason it had to be email this week. Restraint is the whole product.
