Symbols are a way to think more carefully than English allows.

Mathematics is not a club for the credentialed. It is a notation for thinking carefully about things that are too slippery to hold in English. The symbols are scaffolding for ideas that fall apart in prose.
Engineers who avoid math do not avoid the underlying difficulty. They just pay the price in vague reasoning, buggy intuitions, and back-of-envelope estimates that turn out to be order-of-magnitude wrong.
Use math the way you use a debugger: as a tool you reach for when the situation has stopped being legible in words.
