HashiCorp Vault Associate Is Secrets as a Product
The wiki was the incident. The associate exam is literacy in the SKU.

HashiCorp did not invent secrets. It named a category in which a wiki full of tokens became a professional embarrassment, and Vault was the replacement SKU. Vault Associate is literacy in that SKU. A fundamentals badge. Not a secrets program.
I do not hold Vault Associate. I do not hold Terraform Associate. I write from Auckland. Dark Heart Labs does not run Vault. mystic-bytes is markdown on GitHub Pages. Terraform Associate is a different badge for a different product — a plan you can diff. This note is about secrets as a thing you can buy. Same company, now under IBM. Two exams. Confusing them is how you study the wrong logo.
The incentive is the install base. HashiCorp needs operators who already speak Vault so the sales motion is “you hired the people.” The exam is timed, multiple-choice, and expires in two years.1 Job posts ask for it because “we have a secrets story” became something you can interview for.
Buy the sitting if you will touch Vault. Do not treat a pass as rotation, least privilege, or who can unseal the box at 2am.
