Hardware Is a Deadline

Atoms do not patch on Tuesday.

[ essay ]

Hardware ships on a deadline software only pretends to have.

Once a board or device is in someone’s hand, there is no silent patch at 2am — only recalls, spare parts, and customers who do not care about your sprint calendar. I crossed this boundary building streaming gear for darkheartlabs: firmware mistakes outlive the broadcast where a hotfix would have sufficed in a web app. Revision cost is measured in tooling, lead time, and the patience of people holding plastic that draws real current.

Software’s forgiveness is a privilege teams spend casually. Every “we’ll fix it next deploy” habit trains lower standards for the components that cannot be fixed remotely.

Treat at least one software release per quarter as if atoms were involved: fewer moving parts, explicit rollback, documentation that survives a tired operator at 2am.

You are not slowing down. You are borrowing discipline from a domain that cannot afford your optimism.
