Figma the Company Is a File Format With a Board
Multiplayer made a document into a market. Adobe tried to buy the market.

The other Figma essay is about the file: the room, the URL, git as what actually ships. This one is about the firm. Figma the company is a file format with a board attached. Multiplayer turned a document into a market. Adobe announced a purchase at about twenty billion dollars in 2022. The UK CMA and the EU process killed the deal in 2023. The bid still did its job as a number. Someone had priced “the format everyone already lives in.”
I use Figma as a customer for NeuroShell and accessibility-rails-components frames. I have never been on Figma’s payroll. The Adobe episode is public record. What it proved is that the company’s asset is not a vector editor. It is the default document plus the people already inside it. A board can put a multiple on that. A regulator can block the buyer. Neither fact turns the format back into a USB stick.
After the bid died, Figma stayed the room. Enterprise SKUs, FigJam adjacency, the later public-market story: those are how a format company grows once the previous format company cannot absorb it. I still export. I still treat git as the ship format. I also treat Figma Inc. as a priced object, not as a community tool that happened to grow a login screen.
Valuation is a claim about lock-in. Read the bid that way. Then keep a copy you can open when the vendor’s auth blinks.
