Craft is not a mood — it is the observable residue of decisions someone made after the work was already “done.”
I felt the difference shipping dark-heart-themes: two layouts that passed the same acceptance checklist, but only one survived real reading sessions. The survivor had type scale, empty states, and focus rings tuned after launch — work nobody had assigned when the milestone closed. The other looked finished in a demo and frayed in daily use.
Customers rarely articulate why one product feels trustworthy and another feels abandoned. They vote with retention. Craft is the delta they are measuring without naming it.
Teams defer polish because it seldom appears on a roadmap until churn spikes. That ordering is backwards. The second pass lives in transitions, error copy, and the thumbnail that still loads on a slow connection — the places where attention compounds into lifetime value.
Schedule the return visit before you ship. If the only version you will defend is the one you rushed, you are not shipping craft. You are shipping the absence of evidence.
