How to Build a Personal Diffuser Blend for Work and Rest
One to three oils, a stated job, and a small room before you fill the house.

I do not build a “signature blend” on day one. I pick a job: stay with the work, or leave the work. Focus and wind-down are different cues. If they share a bottle, the brain gets a muddy signal. I want smell to mean one thing.
Start with one oil you already tolerate. Sit with it for a few sessions before you add a second. Three is the ceiling for a personal blend I will actually remember. Citrus for a morning desk, a herb if I want something greener, a wood or resin if I am shutting down. Those categories are about how fast the smell leaves the room, not a personality quiz. Write the drops down. “A splash” is how you lose the recipe and overdo the next batch.
Test in a small room you control, with a window you can open. Thirty minutes on a timer is plenty. I have overdone a studio and then had to work inside my own mistake. Coworking and open offices are not your lab. Pets are not extras. A cat in a closed room is a reason to use a personal inhaler or skip diffusion. If you share air with someone who gets migraines, ask. Consent is part of the blend.
Purpose stays visible. Work blend lives with the calendar block. Rest blend lives with the laptop lid. I do not run the focus mix at 11 p.m. and then wonder why I am still refreshing mail. ADHD already blurs start and stop. A scent that always means “we are done” is more useful than a clever three-note story I cannot reproduce on Thursday.
Keep the device boring. Quiet motor, water changed, no app that wants an account. If the first mix gives you a headache, that is a result. Dilute further, drop an oil, or stop. Pregnancy, kids, and pets shrink the list. None of this treats a diagnosis. It is a cue you can smell, tested at a scale you can reverse.
When it works, you will know because you reach for the same two bottles without thinking. That is the build. Complexity can wait until the simple version is boring in a good way.
