A Simple Framework for Blending Essential Oils at Home

Top, middle, and base are evaporation rates. Write the ratios. Mysticism can wait.

Top, middle, and base sound like a personality test. They are evaporation. Citrus and many mints leave the room first. Herbs and florals hang in the middle. Woods and resins stay. I use that map so a blend does not collapse into one note after ten minutes, not so I can talk about my spirit. Percentages beat intuition until you have a notebook full of trials.

For something that touches skin, I start in a measured carrier. A common adult range is about 2 to 3 percent for a body oil, lower on the face, unless a trained person has given you a short, specific exception. That is drops you counted, labeled with the date and the recipe. Patch-test. Pregnancy, nursing, and broken skin change the math. I do not invent a “therapeutic” percent because the week was long. For diffusion, I ignore skin percentages and follow the device plus the room: fewer drops, shorter time, air I can leave. Read the manual. Water is not a carrier oil.

A simple ratio I actually remember: more top than base if I want a work session that stays bright, more base if I want a shutdown that does not vanish. Example, not a law: three drops citrus, two herb, one wood in a diffuser load I have already tested empty. Then I write it down. Next week I change one number. If I change three, I cannot say what worked. The notebook is the framework. Memory is how I repeat a headache.

One dominant note still applies. Layering a whole shelf is not blending. Kids, cats, and shared air shrink the experiment. Do not ingest the mix. Do not put neat oil on skin and call it a prototype. Store bottles away from heat and sun, lids on, out of reach.

I came to this from a desk, not a school. Long screen days and dry offices made me care about air and skin. The blend is a small recipe for a cue. If you cannot reproduce it from the page, it is not a framework yet. It is a mood you had once. Write the ratios. Run the same one four times. Then decide if you need a second.
