Which Translation Tools Help on the Ground — and Which Do Not

Camera and offline packs for menus and transit. Courtesy still has to come out of your mouth.

Camera translate will get you through a menu. It will not get you through a hello you should have practiced on the plane. I use the lens for signs, packets, and transit boards when the alphabet is not mine. I download the offline pack before I lose signal in the airbridge. The battery dies at the worst gate, so the pack is not optional. It is the difference between guessing a platform and standing in the wrong queue.

Conversation mode is for high-stakes rooms: a clinic, a landlord, a police desk. I still want a human check when the words are medical or legal. A model will sound sure while it mangles a dosage or a clause. I show the screen, I watch the face, I ask them to point if the voice is wrong. I do not let the phone finish a sentence I would not sign.

What fails: live translate as a substitute for courtesy. Pointing the microphone at a cashier who is trying to close a sale. Using slang models on elders. Trusting a restaurant review translated into a tone the writer never used. Apps flatten register. They cannot tell you when you are being too familiar, or when a place name in te reo Māori deserves your mouth, not your camera.

The other note in this pair is human effort: the five phrases you will actually say. This note is the toolkit. I keep one app that works offline, one that handles camera well, and I do not stack five that all need accounts. I screenshot the address of the stay in the local script. I do not type it from memory at midnight.

Louisiana English already taught me that translation is more than words. How you ask matters. Aotearoa added place names I needed to hear before I could say them. The phone can gloss a menu. It cannot replace the moment you look up and try. Download first. Charge the battery. Then put the phone down long enough to be a guest.
