What Louisiana Taught Me About Leaving for Oceania

Origin places shape your tolerance for humidity, bureaucracy, and community speed.

[ journal ]

I left Louisiana carrying its weather memory and its pace — slow heat, loud joy, paperwork that assumes you know someone who knows someone. Aotearoa runs on different rails: different holidays, different directness, different expectations of preparation.

The useful skill from home: feeding yourself well on a budget, talking to strangers without performance, surviving humidity with the right fabrics.

The skill to unlearn: assuming every city has 24-hour everything and that loud networking equals progress.

When you relocate, compare cities honestly — not as rankings, as tradeoffs you can live with daily.
