Notes on Discovery Days That Do Not Wreck Monday
One protected explore block a week. Curiosity is recovery pacing, not a second job stacked on Monday.

Curiosity will wreck Monday if you let it run the whole weekend. I have done the peninsula, the late ferry, the one more lookout, and then opened the laptop on Monday with a hangover of logistics: laundry wet, groceries not bought, sleep still on Saturday’s clock. I did not recover. I booked a wreck.
The work-versus-exploring note is about commitments: what you already promised a client or a team. This is about pacing the leftover hunger to see the place. I give it one protected block per week. A morning, or an afternoon, named on the calendar like a meeting I will not move for a nice-to-have errand. The rest of the week, the city can wait. It will.
In Tāmaki Makaurau that block has been a ferry to Devonport and a walk, or the Domain when I needed trees more than a postcard. I leave when the block ends. I do not bargain for sunset if sunset is how I lose the evening I need to cook and sleep. Recovery is part of the point. If I return wrecked, I booked the wrong kind of day.
I keep the block small on weeks when the work is already loud. A neighbourhood I have not walked. A gallery that closes at 4. Not a road trip. The road trip is a different animal and it needs a clear calendar, not a reward jammed against a Tuesday standup.
If I skip the block for two weeks, I notice. The city becomes a corridor between the desk and the supermarket. That is how resentment starts. One block is enough to remember I am somewhere. More than that, in a working week, is how I arrive at Monday already behind.
Protect it the way you protect sleep. Cancel it for a real emergency. Do not cancel it because you feel guilty for not hustling. Guilt is not a transit planner.
