Notes on Mail When You Do Not Have a Door

I do not have a door that stays mine. Mail still arrives. Banks, in particular, have not received the news. They send paper that wants a signature, a card, a notice you cannot screenshot from an app that went paperless except when it did not.

I split the problem. Letters that must be opened and sometimes forwarded: a family address in Louisiana I have permission to use, plus a virtual mailbox that scans envelopes and lets me request the physical item when the scan is not enough. I do not use a friend’s apartment as a surprise depot. I ask. I pay if they want that. I tell them what I expect to land.

Parcels are a different animal. A scanned envelope is not a laptop charger from a shop that will not ship to a P.O. box. For parcels I use a pickup point, a hotel holding agreement in writing, or I wait until I have a stay long enough to put a real name on a door. I do not have expensive gear sent to a short-term rental with a lockbox and a host who usually checks the porch.

When I move toward Aotearoa, I keep the US mail path alive longer than feels elegant. Tax documents, bank letters, the random official envelope that still believes I live on a street I left. I log in to every institution once a quarter and hunt for a digital delivery toggle that actually holds. Then I still watch the scan mailbox, because the toggle lies.

Forwarding rules are country-specific. I read them. Some carriers will not forward parcels. Some virtual mailboxes will not accept certain government mail. I do not find that out from a tracking page that says returned to sender while I am on a ferry.

A running note: who has my current mail plan, what gets scanned, what gets shredded, what gets shipped, and the date I last checked. Mail is boring until a card is sitting in a drawer in another hemisphere and your 2FA has opinions.
