How to Handle Health and Medical Needs While Traveling

Pack the prescriptions, carry the records, and do not skip care because a sprint looks more urgent.

I have delayed a pharmacy run for a standup. That is a stupid trade. A body that cannot sleep, cannot eat, or cannot think is not a remote-work asset. It is a ticket to doing the same work later, worse, from a clinic waiting room.

This is not medical advice and it is not insurance advice. Insurance is coverage. This is the practical layer underneath: what you carry, who you call, and the rule that you do not wait until you cannot type.

Prescriptions travel as a project. I leave with enough supply to cover delays, the original packaging if a pharmacist will want it, and a copy of the prescription or a letter from the prescribing clinician. Names of drugs change across borders. Generic names travel better than brand names. I learned that the hard way between a US bottle and a counter that did not recognize the marketing name on the label.

Records travel too. Vaccination history, allergy list, a short note of chronic issues, the last relevant lab if you have one. Not a novel. Enough that an urgent-care doctor in a city you do not know is not starting from zero while you try to remember dates through a fever.

Travel clinic versus GP is a timing question. A travel clinic is useful before you leave, for destination-specific vaccines and the paperwork some countries still want. Once you are on the ground, a local GP or urgent care is usually the right door for “I am actually sick.” Do not use the emergency department as a pharmacy with a waiting room unless it is actually an emergency.

Skipping care to protect a sprint is how sprints get longer. I have done the Louisiana version of this (tough it out, humidity, denial) and I have done the Aotearoa version (new system, new forms, the temptation to wait until I am “home”). Neither version made me a better builder. Get the appointment. Tell the team you will be late. Bodies do not negotiate with Jira.
